It all started with a little idea...

Sometimes the best things begin without much of a plan, and that's exactly how Moonlight Cottage came to be.

Back during Covid, I woke up one morning with an idea. I wanted to start a little business making candles and table displays. There wasn't a particular reason or some big moment of inspiration. It was simply something I fancied having a go at, and once the idea was in my head, I wanted to see where it would lead.

As it turned out, the table displays never quite became the main event. Somewhere along the way, my attention turned to candles and wax melts, and that was the beginning of something rather lovely.

Finding my feet (and a few favourite fragrances)

I didn't come into candle making knowing what I was doing. Everything began with research, experimenting and learning as I went along.

There was plenty to figure out, and not everything went to plan, but that was all part of the adventure. Slowly, the things I'd been reading about and trying for myself began to make sense.

Before long, I was discovering just how much I enjoyed making things. And of course, there were the fragrances.

From soft, cosy scents to the slightly darker and more unusual, I loved exploring all the different possibilities. Why stick to one style when there are so many wonderful fragrances to discover?

How Moonlight Cottage found its name

Moonlight Cottage wasn't actually the original name of my business.

I'd started out with something completely different, but as things developed, I realised I wanted a name that felt a little more like me.

I've always loved autumn and everything that comes with it. Chilly mornings, falling leaves, cosy evenings, warm blankets.

And Halloween? Well, that's always had a special place in my heart.

I've also always been drawn to the moon and the little bit of mystery it brings to the night sky. Add in my love of all things witchy, magical and just a little spooky, and you'll probably start to understand where I'm going with this.

Then there's my love of cottages. I've always dreamed of living in one, somewhere cosy and full of character, where I could curl up on an autumn evening with a good book.

When I began putting all those little pieces of myself together, the name Moonlight Cottage just seemed to fit.

It brought together the warmth and comfort of everything cosy with the mystery of moonlit nights and a little touch of witchy magic.

It felt like somewhere I'd love to be.

And, more importantly, it finally felt like me.

A little piece of Moonlight Cottage

Today, Moonlight Cottage is my little handmade candle and wax melt business based in Derby, UK.

And although there's a lot more to running a business than I ever imagined when I first had that idea, making the products is still the part I love most.

I enjoy creating something from scratch, choosing fragrances and seeing everything come together. The photography, admittedly, can be a little more tedious! But once I've worked out what I want to do, even that usually falls into place.

What I love more than anything, though, is knowing that people enjoy what I've made.

There's something incredibly rewarding about creating a product with your own hands and then hearing that someone loves it. Whether it's a lovely review, a kind message or a customer coming back for more, those little moments really do mean the world.

Moonlight Cottage has grown from one rather spontaneous idea into a business filled with cosy favourites, seasonal treats and fragrances with a little personality.

I never really knew where that first idea would take me. I just knew I wanted to give it a go.

And I'm so glad I did.
